Best fish and chips in York

"Thompson's Famous Fish & Chips" in York, England, is a renowned restaurant and takeaway that has made a name for itself with its long-standing tradition and focus on high-quality British cuisine. Founded by John Thompson, who successfully operated fish restaurants in other locations like Stamford Bridge and Wetwang before opening this bespoke establishment in 2002, the restaurant stands for consistency and excellence. It was specifically designed according to his vision and features a spacious dining area as well as a separate takeaway counter, making it attractive for both locals and travelers. After more than 20 years, the restaurant was recently completely renovated, showcasing modern, comfortable interiors and a relaxed atmosphere—ideal for couples, families, or larger groups.

Traditional restaurant in England

Culinarily, "Thompson's Famous Fish & Chips" is especially known for its outstanding fish and chips, often praised as some of the best in Yorkshire. The haddock, lightly and crisply fried in a fluffy batter, is particularly appreciated, accompanied by perfectly golden, fluffy chips fried in beef dripping, which give them a distinctive flavor. Another highlight is the Yorkshire fish cake, a regional specialty that impresses with its crispy shell and juicy interior. In addition to fish dishes, the restaurant also offers options for meat lovers, such as a juicy rib-eye steak, as well as vegetarian alternatives prepared with the same care. They take special pride in their gluten-free selection, which is fried in a separate area to avoid cross-contamination and includes both fish and chips. The desserts, such as the sticky toffee pudding or lemon meringue cheesecake, provide a sweet ending that is often praised for its generous portions and freshness.

Gluten free options fish and chips

The beverage selection is simple but complements the menu well. In addition to classic soft drinks and tea—a must with fish and chips—there are also alcoholic options like wine or brandy to round out the meal. However, the emphasis is clearly on the food, with the quality of ingredients taking center stage: the fish comes from the Atlantic and is frozen at sea to guarantee freshness, while the potatoes are sourced from a local supplier in Malton.

Renovated restaurant in York

The atmosphere at "Thompson's Famous Fish & Chips" is bright, friendly, and inviting. The renovated interior is clean and modern, featuring a nautical touch that recalls British coastal tradition. The service is often described as warm and efficient, with the team—many of whom are long-standing employees—placing great importance on customer satisfaction. Especially on busy days, the restaurant attracts a mix of regulars, tourists, and passersby taking a break on their way to the coast. The large parking lot, which also accommodates coaches, underscores the establishment's role as a convenient and popular stop.

Found this little place zipping back to York from a day out on the coast. My "small" cod was almost covered the entire plate, cooked to perfection in an extraordinarily light crispy batter. Daughter enjoyed a child's meal with similarly generous portions and an icecream sundae included. Staff lovely. This establishment closes in the early evening, so get there before 6pm if you can. Only wish we didn't live 5 hours away...

Fantastic! Recently my teenage son & I took my dad for a meal there. The food was delicious! The service was brilliant and the portion size was extremely generous! My son even asked if I could leave a positive review! We will certainly be back for seconds!!

Best place to pull over with a popped tyre. My wife borrowed my car to visit a friend & on the way back she decided to clag a road island & popped my tyre. I had to rescue her & we ended up getting fish & chips. Great day out.

First class fish 'n chips. Delicious. Indoor and outdoor seating, yummy homemade tartar sauce. Good service too. Disabled friendly. Easy to find on Google maps, sign-posted and with plenty of parking. 5* from me and the wife who are regular visitors..

I had chicken and a jacket potato. The chicken was extremely dry and the jacket potato was hard and it didn't taste as though they had added butter, the meal was most unpleasant to eat.

Updated, has improved since last time, been consistent for about 6 or 7 trips , although I got a slightly undercooked cod last time, but in general compared to all the others locally it’s way ahead, don’t feel ripped off neither. Was going here very regularly and further than I should maybe travel, up til 2 months ago I couldn’t recommend higher, but since then I’ve been about 4/5 times, it’s just got worse, portions smaller, smaller fish , and an aftertaste of dirty fat for rest of day, chips are certainly much poorer too, also the service has had orders wrong such as missing a suave/peas so I’ve got to go back, funny thing is you can already tell before you’ve been served somethings amiss with the staff. Hopefully it’ll get back to where it was. Tried Scrap Box since, which is better for ‘Some things’ ie, ‘Service’ ‘Staff’ and most definitely the chips and frying.

First time visiting today, and wasn’t disappointed. Another person serving would be a good idea, but the food was first class.

Overcharged at Takeaway point, when I queried it, I was greeted with a shrug of shoulders..... end of conversation, no attempt to rectify the situation! Food was great as always, spoiled by poor customer service! Shame
